The AMA has gone way too far this time. Now they are actually proposing legislation to mandate how and where women give birth! This is their desperate knee-jerk reaction to the ever-growing body of evidence both in the US and worldwide that proves that home births with a trained midwife are just as safe for low-risk mothers (and babies) as are low-risk births in the hospitals.

Tell our legislators to ignore their whining, and the AMA to grow up:

When I was going through my internship, I had the privilage of training under an ID doc called Mark Crislip. He was House-like (yes, as in the FOX TV show) in his methods, though not so ridiculously abrasive (nor addicted to pain meds).

He puts out two pod casts now. Being an ID doc, the focus of one is obviously infectious diseases. What infections are emerging, what ones are changing, etc. He also has one called QuackCast, which he describes as "a review of alternative medicine from a skeptical point of view". Not the most inspirational of pod casts for alternative practitioners such as myself, but an excellent way of examining if one's own practices actually stand the test of current scientific info.

If anyone is interested, go to www.pusware.com and listen for yourself. I encourage everyone to take a listen. Have fun and enjoy the Autumn.
Very well written and with a lots of valid references, it is worth reading and questionning the rise of US during pregnancy and EFM during labor.
The theory is that the US rises temperature within fetal cells more that we though and admitted by the FDA.. The fetus has more difficulties getting rid of the heat although the amniotic fluid fluid and placenta are helping in the process..We know that too much exposure to heat during the beginning of pregnancy can lead to neural tube defect and The author wonders of the same thing is not happening to the fetal brain cells due to an elevated temperature adn therefore causing brain dysfunctions. She mentions a rise in Left handed BB epoxed to US (not counting the genetic left handed bb...)
POISONING CONSUMERS WITH TEFLON

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has filed a complaint against DuPont for withholding evidence revealing negative health and environmental impacts from a chemical used to produce Teflon. The chemical, commonly known as PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), has been found to cause cancer in laboratory animals. Due to Teflon's popularity (those nifty non-stick frying pans, etc.), PFOA can now be detected in the bodies of 90% of Americans. The EPA is investigating the possibility that DuPont may have learned of potential problems with the chemical more than two decades ago. On an international level, the EPA's announcement has prompted foreign governments to launch investigations into the toxicity of the chemical, and stores in China have begun pulling Teflon products from their shelves.

If you'd like to see, visit the Crafty Vixens tribe and look at the main photo, or take a peak in the photo album. I must say, I was pleased, but very surprised. I do custom beadwork on the side, in addition to working full time. If anyone is interested, I'll do your stethoscope also. Just e-mail for more info.

I am very seriously considering changing my career path to nursing. In fact, our tiny little college here actually has one of the best programs in the country, which I found hard to believe when I first heard that; but that’s what I’ve been told many times.

I am trying to determine if this is the right move for me. It doesn’t seem as daunting as the four-year degree programs, and that part is, of course, appetizing to me. I’m not saying that means it’s a piece of cake – just that I could get down to business a lot sooner once I get that degree. However, I don’t know what kind of pay I would start out with, and that would be a worry for me.

But I’m so tired of working behind a computer feeling so disconnected from people. I really want a job where I am more in contact with people in a helping type of profession. It doesn’t matter to me if it’s a lot of hard work, and I’m not looking to get rich. I just want to ensure I can make a decent enough salary to live on.

I’d really like to hear from any nurses in the medical field to see what you think of your career. Did any of you have careers before this that you changed from? I’d love to hear your stories good and bad, so that I could take everything into consideration. Please email me if you’d rather not note me. I would be so grateful for your input.

I thought this deserves its own thread.

Richard, I have thought about this, and I think I have an answer for you. Not about the JAMA article (which, if I get my hands on, I'll send you a copy of), but how to do DBPCS for acupuncture.

"It's easy to do DBPCS's with pills. Just make somethat look like the real thing but aren't. You can even do it with food stuffs to some extent. Just stuff it in capsules. But with something like traditional acupuncture, where each treatment is different, and each patient would receive a treatment quite different from any other patient how could you blind the treatment? How can you really blind a treatment where it's acknowledged that the intention, energetic strength, and skill of the acupuncturist are at least as important as where the needles are stuck? "

OK, here goes:

The key elements in a double-blind, placebo controlled trial are a) the subject being treated does not know whether they are getting the real thing or the placebo and b) the person gathering data/evaluating outcomes does not know which treatment the patient got. There is no requirement that the person evaluating the outcome be the same as the one who delivered the treatment.

Therefore, here's the trial design:

The TREATMENT group is seen, evaluated, and treated by a Truly Skilled Acupuncturist (TSA) - someone like yourself or someone you would recognize as the real deal. The CONTROL group is seen, "evaluated", and "treated" by a Bull-$hit Artist (BSA) - someone like me, who has watched you do the evaluation and treatment and maybe gotten one or two lessons in sticking needles into someone with a convincing demeanor, but who knows only where to stick the needles (and the places where they are to be stuck are chosen to be bogus anyway). Then, after whatever treatment schedule is done, the patient is evaluated by an independent clinician who does not know which group the patient was in.

This way, we overcome your key objection - that the people delivering treatment aren't really delivering the real thing (because they are not TSAs). In such a setup, the treatment group is getting the best acupuncture that we can find, and the control group is getting stuck with needles by some guy who can talk the talk, but can't treat anything with needles. The patients are treated, the data are gathered by someone who doesn't know how they were treated, the statistical analysis is done, and we can tell whether TSA = BSA.

How's that?
